Shelly Point
Welcome to Shelly Point, tucked near the end of Beaumaris Beach from my previous post. I know you will want to try & count the number of shells on this part of the beach, so while you are at it, I'll keep myself amused with bad shell puns.Shell we begin? 🐚This shellfishly named stretch of beach left me thoroughly shell-shocked. I came for sand, but it must’ve been on vacayshell, replaced entirely by a million nautical nuggets in full clam_our, an army of calcium keepsakes. It was a shell-ebration of ocean treasures. From conch-querors to scallop-stars, the entire mollusk mafia was out in force, clearly trying to mussel their way in.Each step was a crunchy, dance across the shellscape, a total clam-ity for bare feet! Fortunately, I was shell-f sufficient and had joggers on.There were shelltastic spirals, bivalve bonanzas, cockle clusters, barnacle bling and seashore sequins. It wasn’t just a beach walk, it was a shell-athon, and by the end I was left in absolute "shuck and awe".How did you go? How many did you count? ;)Thanks to everyone who takes the time to comment on my photos, they are greatly appreciated!Waterscape 48/100 in 2025

www.holiday2017.co.uk/south-australiaPhotographing sunsets at Glenelg Beach, especially from just behind the surf lookout shack, is a dream for anyone chasing golden-hour drama with a coastal twist.
🌅 Why That Spot Works So Well
- Framing the Shack: The surf lookout tower itself adds a strong focal point—its silhouette against the setting sun creates a striking contrast, especially when the sky is ablaze with oranges and purples.
- West-Facing Coastline: Glenelg’s west-facing orientation means the sun sets directly over the water, giving you uninterrupted views of the horizon.
- Reflections on Wet Sand: Just after the tide recedes, the wet sand behind the shack mirrors the sky’s colours, doubling the drama in your frame.
- Jetty Glow: The nearby jetty often catches the last light, and if you angle your shot right, you can include both the shack and the jetty for a layered composition.
📷 Tips for Capturing the Magic
- Golden Hour Timing: Arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset to catch the evolving light and cloud textures.
- Silhouette Play: Use the shack as a silhouette by exposing for the sky—this works especially well when there are dramatic clouds.
- Low Angle Shots: Get down close to the sand to capture reflections and add depth.
- Foreground Interest: Include beachgoers, seagulls, or even the shack’s structure to give your photo a sense of place and scale.
️ Visual Inspiration
You can find some stunning examples of this exact setup on Dreamstime and Shutterstock—look for images where the surf tower is backlit by the sunset or framed against a glowing sky.

52 Weeks ProjectTwo days in Italy for a change...
Location: The beach of Porto Maurizio in Impreia, Liguria, Italy.
Coordinates: 43°52'35.4"N 8°01'20.5"E (Google Maps)
Vacation: This year's Summer vacation is divided into two. The first week was a road trip to Germany and France to visit four themeparks. The second week (from 16 till 21 June) was a six day flight to Nice including a two night stay in the little coastal town Imperia.
Imperia: Imperia is a coastal city and comune in the region of Liguria, Italy. It is the capital of the Province of Imperia, and historically it was capital of the Intemelia district of Liguria. Benito Mussolini created the city of Imperia on 21 October 1923 by combining Porto Maurizio and Oneglia, as well as the surrounding village communes of Piani, Caramagna Ligure, Castelvecchio di Santa Maria Maggiore, Borgo Sant'Agata, Costa d'Oneglia, Poggi, Torrazza, Moltedo and Montegrazie.
The economy of Imperia is based on tourism, food industry (olive oil and pasta), a specialized agriculture (olive groves and flowers in greenhouses) and on trading and harbour activities. The seaside tourism represents an important aspect of the economy of Imperia.
Imperia consists of the two historical districts of Porto Maurizio and Oneglia, which lie on either side of the River Impero that gives its name to the city.
Area: 45.95 km2
Population: 42,328 (2017)
Elevation: 10-534 meters

Me and Italia: Strangely enough I have only been to Italy twice in my life before I made this two-day trip, while I also have an amorous history with an Italian around the turn of the century. In 1975 I went on a flight holiday with my parents to Catolicca (Adriatic coast) and during my Interrail holiday in 1987 I travelled by train from Brindisi in the South to Ventimillia. It felt good to be back.

DFC_0689: a group of people walking on a beach
This photo shows a coastal beach scene during what appears to be low tide. The shoreline has several distinct bands of wet and dry sand, creating a striped pattern as the tide has receded. A few people are walking along the beach at various distances from the shore. In the background, there's a small boat visible on the calm ocean waters, and some wooden posts or pilings can be seen jutting out from the water on the right side of the image. The sky is overcast with a gray-blue hue, giving the scene a tranquil, somewhat moody atmosphere. The beach appears quite flat and expansive, typical of a tidal area where the water recedes significantly during low tide, allowing people to walk far out on the exposed sand. The overall scene depicts a peaceful day at what seems to be a quiet, relatively uncrowded beach.

DFC_0692: a beach with a few boats floating in the water
This photo shows a coastal view of what appears to be a major city skyline in the distance across a body of water. In the foreground, there's a sandy beach area with some tidal flats or mudflats visible where the water has receded. Two small fishing boats can be seen floating on the water between the shore and the city. The city skyline features numerous high-rise buildings and skyscrapers creating a distinctive urban profile against a somewhat hazy or overcast sky. The water appears calm with a grayish tone. This looks like it could be a view from a beach area near a major coastal city, possibly in Southeast Asia based on the style of the fishing boats and the urban development pattern. The scene captures the interesting contrast between traditional fishing activities in the foreground and modern urban development in the background.

DFC_0713: a tent on the beach
This photo shows a beautiful coastal scene viewed from beneath a canvas canopy or tent structure supported by wooden poles. The foreground features a sandy beach with what appears to be some footwear or items left on the sand. In the middle distance, there's a vast stretch of wet sand or tidal flat where the water has receded, with a small figure walking across it. The tide appears to be low, exposing large sections of the beach. In the background, there's a body of water with some boats visible, and beyond that, green hills or mountains create a scenic backdrop. The setting appears to be in a bay area with what looks like a small coastal settlement visible along the shoreline. The scene has a peaceful, somewhat overcast atmosphere, typical of a quiet day at a beachside location that might be in Southeast Asia or a similar tropical coastal region.

DFC_0725: a boy playing with a shovel on the beach
This photo shows a child playing on a beach with a colorful plastic shovel. The child is wearing a blue cap, a black t-shirt, and patterned shorts, and is barefoot on the sand. They appear to be scooping or tossing sand with the bright orange and green shovel. In the background, you can see the shoreline where the water meets the beach. It looks like a fun day of beach activities and sand play, capturing a typical childhood moment of enjoying time at the seaside.

DFC_0682: a woman and a child standing on a beach
The photo shows a beach scene with a sandy shore and gentle waves. There are two figures on the beach - an adult standing and holding a smartphone, appearing to take a photo or video of the scenery, and a small child crouched down by the sand, seemingly exploring or playing. The adult is wearing jeans and a light-colored top with what appears to be a hat or head covering, while the child is dressed in blue. The beach has a calm, overcast atmosphere with shallow water visible where the waves meet the shore. It captures a peaceful moment of beachcombing or exploration during what looks like a quiet day at the seaside.

DFC_0705: a group of people playing on the beach
This photo shows a beach scene with people enjoying activities at the shoreline. In the foreground, several individuals are walking along the wet sand, with some appearing to be collecting items or playing at the water's edge. In the background, two small fishing boats can be seen floating on the grayish water. These traditional-looking vessels have distinctive pole structures extending upward, typical of local fishing boats in many coastal Asian regions. The horizon reveals an impressive cityscape with numerous high-rise buildings and skyscrapers creating a modern skyline. The atmosphere appears somewhat hazy or overcast, giving the scene a moody quality. The contrast between the traditional fishing boats and the modern urban development in the background highlights the juxtaposition of traditional ways of life against rapid urban development, a common sight in many coastal cities across Asia.

DFC_0699: three children playing in the sand on a beach
The photo shows children playing at a beach during what appears to be low tide. In the foreground, two small children are sitting in shallow water - one wearing a pink outfit and the other in blue. Meanwhile, another child in a pink top is walking or running on the wet sand in the background. The beach has a muted, grayish appearance suggesting either early morning or evening light, creating a peaceful coastal scene. The children seem to be enjoying their exploration of the tidal pools and wet sand, engaged in the simple joy of beach play.

DFC_0714: a tarp hanging over a sand beach
This photo shows a coastal view from what appears to be a simple beach shelter or structure with a makeshift covering. In the foreground, you can see wooden poles and supports that are likely part of a beach hut or vendor stall, with some fabric or tarp visible at the top of the frame. The view looks out over a sandy beach at low tide, with wet sand and shallow water visible. In the distance across the water, there's a city skyline with multiple high-rise buildings visible on the horizon. The sky is somewhat overcast with a gray-blue tone. There are a few small boats visible on the water between the beach and the city. The overall scene suggests this might be taken from a less developed beach area looking toward a major coastal city, possibly in Southeast Asia or another tropical region.

DFC_0721: two girls walking on the beach
This photo shows two children playing at the beach. They're walking through shallow water on what appears to be a calm, overcast day. Both are wearing pink and purple swimwear or beach clothes, and their reflections can be seen in the wet sand and shallow water. The beach stretches out in the background with the ocean visible in the distance. It captures a peaceful moment of childhood joy and exploration at the shoreline.

DFC_0700: three boys playing in shallow water on a beach
The photo shows three children playing at a beach or shoreline. They appear to be exploring the shallow water where it meets the sand. One child is wearing a bright yellow outfit and is bending down, while another is crouched in the water, seemingly examining or collecting something. The third child is standing nearby watching. They're all engaged in what looks like a fun discovery activity at the water's edge, perhaps finding shells, small creatures, or interesting objects in the wet sand. The beach has a pale, light-colored sand and the water is calm and shallow. The scene captures a peaceful moment of childhood curiosity and play in nature.

DFC_0715: two children playing in the sand on a beach
The photo shows two young children playing on a beach at what appears to be low tide. One child is wearing pink/purple clothing and the other is wearing blue. They are both crouched down, seemingly exploring or drawing in the wet sand. The beach has different textures visible - there are wet areas where water has receded, leaving a smooth surface, and some scattered pebbles or shells. The scene captures a classic childhood beach experience of discovery and play along the shoreline. The overall lighting suggests it might be an overcast day, giving the scene a calm, subdued atmosphere.

Cabo San Juan, Beach Two. Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona/ Tayrona National Natural Park, Santa Marta, Magdalena, Colombia.
The famous part’s just around the rocks. This is the quieter stretch, where the sand’s a bit scruffier and the vibe is less curated. That tent might be someone's Airbnb now. Tayrona’s the kind of park where time dilates: ten minutes turns into a week, and your skin forgets what cool air feels like.📝 This image is available under Creative Commons 2.0 (Attribution required). Whale Rock (yes, really). Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona/ Tayrona National Natural Park, Santa Marta, Magdalena, Colombia.
That name isn’t official, but come on. Tayrona’s coast is full of boulders that look suspiciously like things: turtles, whales, sleeping dogs. This one’s iconic if you’ve walked the loop. Framed wide to catch the melt between land, sea, and the kind of sky that makes you question all your life choices.📝 This image is available under Creative Commons 2.0 (Attribution required). Jen, in the Pause Between Waves. Clifton Beach, Tasmania
If this isn’t freedom, it’s close. Just Jen, the water, and a sky so blank it feels like an apology. She’s neither swimming nor drifting, just sitting with it. Like the tide could sort her out if she let it. February, remember. Not Quite Ready for the Tide. Clifton Beach, Tasmania
Clifton, mid-February. That moment where the water’s colder than you remembered, the sun’s too high to hide behind, and someone’s just said your name in the wrong tone. Jen caught mid-turn, expression somewhere between suspicion and survival. Shot low in the swell, f/5.6 to catch the light slicing across shoulder and wave. The hills behind do their best impression of permanence, but it’s her face that anchors the shot: real, raw, slightly annoyed.📝 This image is available under Creative Commons 2.0 (Attribution required). Copper Water, Quiet Distance. Clifton Beach, Tasmania
Hair like seaweed in sunlight, limbs just below the surface, and not a single movement wasted. There’s something monastic in this frame - like the back of someone listening to silence and liking it. Shot into the glare, but the golden tones stayed intact, thanks to blind luck and decent glass. No horizon, no drama. Just a body, a line of light, and the great indifference of green water.📝 This image is available under Creative Commons 2.0 (Attribution required). Please link to the original photo and the license. Wave Incoming, Headland Watching. Clifton Beach, Tasmania
